Nordstrom Comes to Canada

Nordstrom is the latest U.S. retailer planning to set up shop north of the border.

According to previously published reports, the Seattle-based retailer is expected to open in four locations, including a trio of prime Sears Canada locations set to be shuttered this fall. Nordstrom earned the No. 1 spot for luxury retailers in a consumer survey of wealthy Americans in May of this year.

The company is regularly ranked as one of Forbes Magazine’s top 100 companies to work for.

Retailers like Holt Renfrew, the Bay, and Harry Rosen can expect heavy competition from the American entrant, which has more than 200 stores across the United States and more than $9-billion in annual sales. Canada’s strong economy and the weakness of U.S. consumer sales have made the Canadian market attractive for retailers such as Target Inc., which bought out the leases to 189 Zellers stores in 2011 and will begin serving customers early next year.
